Coast set to light up for the Queen

VILLAGERS are being called upon to light beacons along the North Yorkshire coast to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Buckingham Palace wants 2,012 beacons to be lit across the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, the Commonwealth and UK Overseas Territories, on June 4 next year to mark her 60 years on the throne - 42 of which are planned for North Yorkshire. Scarborough Borough Council and English Heritage are already planning a beacon ceremony at Scarborough Castle to mark the milestone, though discussions are still ongoing and a budget has yet to be finalised.

Now the Mayor of Scarborough, Coun John Blackburn, is appealing for villages and community groups along the coast to get behind the celebrations.

He said: “In my view these national celebrations are entirely justified and I hope residents in the borough will take a lead from this council and mark the jubilee, either by lighting a beacon of their own or organising other celebrations.”

The tradition dates back hundreds of years, with beacons lit nationally in 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.
