The woman, who was seen stranded near the pier at the beach by a member of the public, was pulled to safety by Cleethorpes Coastguard Rescue Team and then checked over by staff from the Yorkshire Air Ambulance last night.

Dave Hardy, senior maritime operations officer with the UK Coastguard, has urged walkers to check tide times, put on suitable clothing and ensure they have a way of calling for help before setting off.

He said: “If you do find yourself stuck in mud, try to spread your weight as much as possible and try to avoid moving and remain calm.

“Discourage others from trying to rescue you as without the proper equipment, they may get stuck too.”

Anyone finding themselves in serious difficulty at the beach is urged to call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
