Coat may be record-breaker after community knitting project

Children and parishioners are waiting to find out if they have broken the world record for the largest coat yet made, after a mammoth community knitting project.

The coat was made as part of a project for the annual festival at St George’s Church and Primary School in Stockport, Cheshire.

It is made up of nearly 8,000 knitted panels and measures 42ft 6in high and 18ft 2in wide, beating the measurements of the current world record held by a coat made in the Ukraine.

The coat was hung up in the church and will now be entered for a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

It will eventually be taken apart and given to charity to make blankets.
