Cobbled-street residents hit at mail 'madness'

Residents accused the Royal Mail of health and safety "madness" after it refused to deliver post along their cobbled street because it is too dangerous.

The regular postman on Bilton Terrace, in Bideford, Devon, initially refused to deliver mail after he slipped before Christmas.

A Royal Mail manager visited and told residents deliveries would be suspended because the lane is too slippy and uneven for him to carry out his rounds.

Post is now delivered to one home at the bottom of the 280-year-old lane and the lady who lives there walks the 20 metres to deliver the packages and letters through her neighbours' letterboxes.

Resident Sally Bellamy, 53, said they were all angry with Royal Mail and want their deliveries reinstated.

"I should call it madness," she said. "They say it's too dangerous to walk on, it's slippery, absolutely lethal, but I don't have a problem and nobody else seems to have a problem. I think it is stupid."
