Coble to appear at seafood festival

A TASTE of the sea will be on offer when Bridlington stages its third seafood festival this weekend.

The Bridlington Harbour Commissioners are staging the festival to celebrate the town’s status as England’s premier shell-fishing port.

As well as the attraction of free samples of crab and lobster, freshly dressed on the harbour side, a range of maritime and heritage organisations will be attending, including the Coble and Keelboat Society, the new North Eastern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority, the Whitby & District Fishing Industry Training School and the RNLI. Plans for the proposed Marina will also be on show and there will be a children’s quiz and treasure hunt.

One of Flamborough’s last cobles, the Imperialist, built by Hargraves Potter Hopwood, son of Robert Hopwood, who between 1862 and 1939 built a remarkable 600 cobles, will be on display.

Chairman of Bridlington Harbour Commissioners George Traves said: “It’s all about showing people what is on their doorsteps – a sustainable fishery with no discards.”

The event at Clough Hole Car Park runs on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
