Cold callers warned to stay away as residents back zone

COLD callers in Ilkley have been warned that parts of the town have been closed for business.

Officers from the Ilkley Neighbourhood Policing Team, residents and West Yorkshire Trading Standards have now created the first no-cold calling zone in Ilkley after it was given the go ahead from residents.

It has been introduced in response to a number of instances of cold calling in Ilkley this year and to several crimes involving fraudulent traders and distraction burglars.

The zone is now operating across five streets on the Grove Park Estate and has been financed by cash confiscated by police from criminals using the Proceeds of Crime Act.

Stickers and signs are now being displayed in homes taking part in the schemes which could be offered to other parts of the town if it proves popular and funding is available.

While the majority of cold callers trying to sell products such as double glazing or roofing may be genuine, the technique can also be often used by thieves to trick their way into houses claiming to be from utilities companies.

Officers have stressed the cold calling zone would only be intended to put off opportunists and thieves rather than reputable trades and salesmen.

Insp Sue Sanderson, of the Ilkley Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Cold calling, even when by perfectly legitimate businesses as many are, can be intimidating for some of our residents so this initiative allows them to make it clear they do not want to be contacted without having to speak to callers on the doorstep.”

The Inspector said Ilkley had not had a significant problem with bogus officials or distraction burglaries over the past year but several crimes had been reported over the winter and spring, prompting the scheme.

Graham Hebblethwaite, Chief Officer of Trading Standards, said “We always advise people never to do business with a person who calls at their door without an appointment. If you need work doing, always obtain two or three quotes from reputable traders, in particular those that are members of registered trader scheme.”
