Cold puts drivers on horns of dilemma

Deer at the frost-covered Studley Royal, near Ripon, provided a striking picture of winter yesterday while sub-zero temperatures caused problems for commuters and the emergency services.

Police in South Yorkshire said six cars were stolen yesterday morning after they were left unattended by owners who had left the vehicles running in an attempt to defrost windscreens. Another vehicle was stolen in Epworth, North Lincolnshire, and both South Yorkshire and Humberside Police issued warnings as the cold weather continues.

Inspector Craig Clifton, of South Yorkshire Police said: “You don’t only run the risk of your vehicle being stolen but you may also lose the right to make an insurance claim because leaving the keys in the ignition could invalidate your insurance.”
