Cold shoulder for rogue traders

COLD callers are being frozen out in North East Lincolnshire after the launch of four new “control zones” barring them from the area.

The zones – which are being introduced in Grafton Street and The Ridgeway in Grimsby, The Drive in Waltham, and Beatty Avenue in Scartho – will see signs being put up warning rogue traders to stay away. There are now 57 Cold Calling Control Zones in the borough, which are aimed at reassuring residents and encouraging them to challenge unwanted callers.

Coun David Bolton, the portfolio holder for community safety and neighbourhoods at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “Cold Calling Control Zones really help local residents to protect themselves and each other from doorstep crime and distraction burglaries.

Residents can keep themselves even safer by remembering to use a door chain and by check- ing the identification of all callers.”

There are 160 similar zones in the East Riding, where 95 complaints about unscrupulous doorstep traders were made to trading standards officers in just over a month this summer.
