College fair to showcase different opportunities for would-be volunteers

People interested in volunteering can explore what opportunities are available at a volunteers’ fair in Bridlington next week.

The event, being organised by East Riding Council’s youth support service and East Riding Voluntary Action Services (ERVAS), will be held at East Riding College on Tuesday, March 13.

It will be open from 1.30pm for students at the college while members of the public over the age of 16 can attend between 4.30pm and 8pm.

Organisations taking part will include Barnardo’s, the RNLI, the Citizens Advice Bureau, Sewerby Hall and Gardens, and the Guides.

Katherine Stoney, volunteering officer at the youth support service, said: “Volunteering is really on the up at the moment as people seek volunteering experience to help them gain future employment.

“It’s also a great way to have fun and meet new people and is open to just about anyone. People attending the fair will be able to see the variety of organisations that have volunteer roles available.”

Anne Watkins, volunteer centre co-ordinator at ERVAS, added: “Volunteering is very much a win-win situation. Communities can be improved tremendously through the work of volunteers, who can gain valuable skills and experience through their volunteering.

“People get involved for all sorts of reasons, such as making a difference, meeting people, building their confidence or having something extra to put on their CV and boost their career options. Whatever the reason, I would encourage everyone to give it a try.”
