College students injured in bus crash

Around 20 students en-route to Darlington College sustained “what are believed to be minor injuries” and have been taken to hospitals around the Aldbrough St John area for treatment, a spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said.

The collision happened at around 8.40am this morning (Thursday), on an unclassified road between Aldbrough St John and the road which leads to Piercebridge near Darlington.

The driver of the van sustained leg injuries and the driver of the bus also suffered minor injuries.

A Darlington College spokesman said: “A total of 14 students from the college were involved and some from a different school.

“They have varying degrees of injury, some are going to hospital for a precaution. We think one has a broken nose.

“We have sent staff to the scene along with counsellors to do as much as they can to help.

“The most important thing is that no one was seriously injured and it could have been a lot worse.”

Any witnesses to the collision are asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2 and ask for Traffic Sergeants Hamish Halloway, or Graham Waller.
