College’s pewter workshop gives Master Cutler a hand

the new Master Cutler Pam Liversidge and Consort Doug Liversidge enjoyed their visit to Freeman College Sheffield to have their hands cast in pewter.

For the first time in its 387-year history, the Sheffield-based Company of Master Cutlers has a woman at the helm, mechanical engineer Mrs Liversidge.

Founded five years ago, Freeman College is a specialist education college for young people with severe autistic spectrum conditions and operates on a number of sites across the city.

All new students cast their hand in pewter to recognise the start of their three year course and help pewter tutor Danny Rowen with the hand casting of visiting VIPs.

Freeman College spokesman David Heugh said: “With their strong engineering and crafts background, the Master Cutler and consort were very impressed with the quality of student work on their tour of the pewter and copper workshops and looked forward to maintaining the strong links between The Cutlers’ Company and Freeman College.”

The College has created over 200 new jobs in the past five years and the flagship Sterling and Butcher Work sites in the former industrial heart of the city also host the award-winning Fusion Café and the newly opened Ruskin Arts and Crafts Shop, all of which give work experience opportunities to the students.
