Comedian cleared of car park assault charge

Blue comic Roy "Chubby" Brown was yesterday cleared of hitting a 21-year-old woman in the face during a foul-mouthed row in a supermarket car park.

The 65-year-old, of East Harsley, Northallerton, was accused of punching Kelly Oliver after he nearly bumped his Lexus into her grandmother's parked car.

Brown, charged under his real name Royston Vasey, denied common assault last September in Sainsbury's car park in Middlesbrough town centre.

Fran Wood, presiding, told Teesside Magistrates' Court in Middlesbrough: "Due to the inconsistencies of the evidence of all witnesses and the poor quality of the CCTV footage, we are not convinced beyond all reasonable doubt that Mr Vasey is guilty of the offence."

Brown told the court he put his hands up to push Miss Oliver back after she had raised her hands towards him for the third time during their car park confrontation.
