Comedian Eddie Large recovering after fall complications

The TV comic, one half of double act Little and Large, broke four ribs after tripping over a road sign near his home in Portishead, near Bristol.

He was taken to hospital but took a turn for the worse when he contracted pneumonia and doctors discovered he had pancreatic problems and a collapsed lung.

After spending time in a high dependency unit, his condition gradually improved and he hopes to leave Bristol Royal Infirmary next week.

From his hospital bed, Large told the Daily Mirror: “A few weeks ago I fell over a road sign and I really jarred my shoulders, I cracked some ribs, then I had a collapsed lung and pancreatic issues, it really shook me up. I got pneumonia as well.

“I was in critical care for a week and I was in a high dependency unit for another week. It was scary and it’s really shaken me up.”

Large, who was born in Glasgow but grew up in Manchester and supports Manchester City, formed his double act with Syd Little in 1963. In 1971 they won TV’s Opportunity Knocks and appeared regularly on television for the next 20 years.

Large – real name Hugh McGinnis – is married to Patsy and underwent a heart transplant 10 years ago.

Former Manchester City physiotherapist Roy Bailey took to social media to wish Large a speedy recovery.

“Tweeting all Blues Eddie Large is poorly/unwell in Hospital Bristol. Please send him your support,” he wrote on Twitter.
