Comedian's football signing is no joke

AN AMATEUR football club has unveiled its biggest signing to date – after comedian Johnny Vegas agreed to become its president.

The stand-up comic and actor has become involved in Fylingdales FC after he recorded a show, called Shed Town, for BBC Radio 4 at Robin Hood’s Bay last month.

Club secretary Neil Purves helped with locations for the four-part comedy series – which is due to be broadcast next year – letting the production team use his garden shed and the club house for their recordings.

Then, Dale Wood – who runs the recently-launched supporters’ club – issued the invitation after getting to know the comedian, who has been visiting Robin Hood’s Bay frequently for more than a decade.

Mr Dale works behind the bar at the Laurel Inn where Vegas has been a regular customer.

“It seemed like a good opportunity for him to become involved with the club,” he explained.
