Commended lifeguard diedwhen car crashed into field

A MAN who died when his car crashed into a field had recently been given a commendation for bravery.

Lewis Redshaw, 19, died when a green BMW 316 left the road at Argham crossroads on the road from Grindale to Burton Fleming last Wednesday.

His mother, Jane Marshall, has revealed the part-time lifeguard had been commended for a saving a young boy’s life during an incident at Cayton Bay, near Scarborough.

She spoke of her pride in Lewis and said his death had left “an irreplaceable gap”.

“Lewis was such a kind and caring son, he had a wicked sense of humour and had a strong enthusiastic character which filled a room and made everyone smile,” she said.

“My son was one in a million; he has left an irreplaceable gap. I couldn’t have wished for a better son.

“We had a special bond and he was always there for me. He filled me with pride everyday.”She described him as a practical joker who “encompassed the best of life”.

Mr Redshaw was a third-year accountancy student at East Riding College who enjoyed weight training and listening to music.

He idolised the reggae star Bob Marley and accomplished one of his biggest dreams last November when he travelled to Jamaica to visit Marley’s grave. He was also invited to meet the singer’s brother.

Ms Marshall said her son’s death had also left his father, sister and two brothers “devastated”.

She said she wanted to thank the police and her family and friends for their help and support since the crash.

She said: “Lewis will leave a big hole in a lot of people’s lives and because of his young and enthusiastic outlook on life, people who knew him will look back and smile at his memory.

“I would like to thank PC Vince Worrall for his understanding, along with the emergency services and my family and friends who have helped and supported me at this difficult time.”

A girl and boy, both aged 17, who were also in the car, suffered minor cuts and bruises in the accident.

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the crash, which happened at 8.50pm.
