Community artwork worth about £12,000 lost in huge blaze at mill

Demolition crews will this weekend be at the scene of a huge blaze at a Bradford mill which saw dozens of people moved from their homes.

The fire at the four-storey Grade II-listed Drummond Mill, in Lumb Lane, Manningham, which started just before 11.30am on Thursday, had 120 firefighters at the scene at one stage yesterday.

The service said last night that the fire was “smouldering” and that “water is still being used to extinguish the fire by way of ground monitors which are in use around the building”.

The remainder of the mill is unsafe for fire crews to enter, and fire service bosses said they will work alongside demolition crews this weekend. A spokeswoman said: “The public are still advised to keep windows and doors closed, due to the smoke plume in the Canal Road area.”

Among the organisations affected was Cecil Green Arts, a Bradford arts collective specialising in large works of art for community parades, which lost all its work, worth an estimated £12,000. Five years of community artwork, including giant puppets and lanterns, are stored by the CGA at Drummonds Mill.
