Community first for baby George...

The deputy registrar for York City Council, Rachel Parkinson, holds newborn George Thompson, whose birth was registered by his parents Mark and Naomi, from Acomb, York, at the Hob Moor Children's Centre in Acomb yesterday.

The city council is one of the first local authorities in the country to promote a new Government initiative, under which parents can in future visit birth register offices throughout the community rather than trek to the local town hall.

There is currently a council registrar based at three Sure Start children's centres across York, while a fourth, the Knavesmire centre, will open later this spring.

Mothers and fathers can choose between New Earswick on Mondays, Hob Moor Children's Centre on Wednesdays or The Avenues, Tang Hall, on Thursdays.

York Council's registration services manager Rob Livesey said: "This new register service is offered at minimal cost but with maximum effect.

"The service is very well used – especially the Hob Moor Children's Centre."

To make appointments, residents should call the Bootham Register Office on (01904) 654477.
