Community help for stroke victims

A NEW service providing stroke patients with extensive rehabilitation and support after they have been discharged from hospital has been launched in North East Lincolnshire.

Physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, social workers and technical instructors are among the experts in the new enhanced community stroke team being run by Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Team leader Amanda Young said: “A stroke can have a wide ranging effect on a person’s function and independence resulting in them requiring intensive therapy and support.

“A stroke can affect activities such as walking, or everyday activities such as cooking or dressing, speech or swallowing, memory or mood.

“The aim of the team is to help support and rehabilitate patients after they have been discharged from hospital. If people are referred to the team, they will be assessed and the team will work with them to identify goals to work towards in their rehabilitation to optimise their independence.”
