Community library to open at care home site

THE latest in a series of pioneering schemes to get library services into the heart of North Yorkshire's rural communities has opened in a care home development for the elderly.

The outlet at Sycamore Hall in Bainbridge is the latest in a new generation of libraries as North Yorkshire County Council looks to ensure isolated communities can still have access to services.

The Yorkshire Post revealed last month that a village pub, The George and Dragon in Hudswell, near Richmond, was one of the first venues to be launched under the 100,000 scheme.

The community library service at Sycamore Hall, which is an ExtraCare housing scheme, will be run by volunteers from the village with 1,000 books and a public access computer.

It will have a self-issue kiosk so that customers can check books out and in themselves.

The council's executive member for adult and community services, Chris Metcalfe, who officially opened the library, said: "The tenants at Sycamore Hall have turned their home into a real community hub, and the library outlet is just another addition to the excellent amenities they enjoy."

The county council has lined up a series of venues to host the community-run libraries. Services are being offered in a village hall in North Stainley, near Ripon, and a community "hub" in Grassington.
