Community to mark fourth anniversary of flood disaster

People whose lives were turned upside down by the floods of June 2007 will take part in a day of activities to mark the fourth anniversary of the disaster early next month.

A flood awareness day has been organised at Winn Gardens, in Middlewood, Sheffield, which was badly affected, and it aims to help people prepare for a similar deluge.

The event has been organised by the organisation which runs Sheffield Council’s housing Sheffield Homes, Groundwork Sheffield, Sheffield Wildlife Trust and the River Stewardship Company.

It will take place on Friday June 3 on the playing fields at Winn Gardens, which is a large council estate, run by Sheffield Homes.

A spokesman said: “The morning will focus on understanding the risks and dangers of flooding, and how local people can be better prepared.

“Members of the Sheffield Flood Resilience Network will be on hand with leaflets and information. The afternoon of the event will focus on practical conservation work with the River Stewardship Company.

“The river stewards will be looking for volunteer community members to work on improving a stretch of local waterway, removing litter, invasive vegetation and installing wildlife habitats.

“Activities will focus on removing litter and overgrown vegetation from the channel and river banks to minimise flood risk and improve the look of the area along with the installation of wildlife habitats. “Activities aim to promote a sense of the value in the riverside within the local community which may go some way to reducing fly tipping and littering.”
