Community spirit helps to restore historic church to its former glory

THREE years ago, this historic church was in such a poor state of repair that it faced closure.

But the generosity of the local community, which raised almost 54,000, and contributions from other bodies means St Andrew Church, at Paull, which was damaged by shots when Hull was besieged by the Royalists during the Civil War, has not only been saved but enhanced.

The nave had a completely new roof, the west wall of the tower was repointed, the bell, which hadn’t been rung for 20 years, was restored and a servery and toilet were installed.

Parishioners are now looking forward to a visit this Sunday by the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, who will be leading a service of celebration at 11am.

Church warden Kay Burn said the response of local people had been “absolutely fantastic”. The money was raised through auctions, garden parties and parachute jumps – and twice closing the village’s Main Street for a street fair.

Mrs Burn said it proved that the church, which dates back to 1355, was still important to people. She added: “They want it to be there for when they need it, for Christenings and for weddings. Now we have the new facilities we can use it for so many more things.”

A heritage trail taking in the village is due to open in the spring, with a cafe at the church.
