Commuter route closed and homes evacuated after Thornbury, Bradford fire

MOTORISTS were being urged to a busy West Yorkshire commuter route today after a fire broke out in a garage containing gas cylinders.

Leeds Road at is expected to be closed at Thornbury, Bradford, for most of the day. Diversions are in place but there were two-mile traffic queues this morning.

More than 60 homes were evacuated last night amid fears that a blaze which broke out in a garage on Woodhall Terrace in Thornbury, could spread to nearby acetylene cylinders.

Residents living within 200m of the blaze were told to leave their homes. Firefighters remain at the scene.

West Yorkshire Police said a 200m cordon and road closures were expected to be in place until 4pm on Thursday. Motorists were urged to avoid the area during the rush hour.

Crews are expected to be on site for the next 24 hours.
