Complaint over news quiz joke

A FORMER teacher has complained to the BBC after its top-rated radio comedy programme The News Quiz broadcast a joke he says was mocking Yorkshire.

William Snowden, a Leeds historian, says he was outraged after panellist Andy Hamilton and chairman Sandi Toksvig swapped quips about Prime Minister Gordon Brown's Bigot-gate gaffe in Rochdale on Friday night's Radio Four programme.

Mr Snowden, 58, said: "Sandi Toksvig said it sounded like a constituency in Yorkshire and he came out with a crack about Bigotshire. I thought it really was outrageous suggesting that everyone in Yorkshire was a bigot and I made a complaint on that basis.

"Perhaps Yorkshire was chosen because there has been a British National Party representation but it is outrageous to suggest that an entire county is bigoted."
