Concern over bus service failings

MEMBERS of a parish council in one of the more remote areas of South Yorkshire have called a meeting with transport chiefs to discuss problems with bus services in the area.

Councillors in Dunford, in the Pennine foothills on the northern edge of Sheffield, have called the meeting on Tuesday, April 12 at 7pm at Crow Edge Community Centre. Both representatives from South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive and the Stagecoach bus company will attend.

Members said they decided to call the meeting because buses running from Holmfirth to Barnsley continue to miss Dunford Bridge, leaving villagers stranded with no bus service.

A council spokesman said the buses only ran through Dunford Bridge every two hours, which meant passengers faced a long wait for the next one if a service failed to arrive.

They said: “Parishioners at Dunford Bridge, particularly the elderly, use this bus service to go to the doctors in Penistone as well as for shopping.

“The council has decided to call the public meeting because the buses are now frequently missing Dunford Bridge and we feel it is now time to take action.”
