Concern over store food thefts as recession bites

POLICE yesterday warned people struggling in the recession not to turn to crime, after new shoplifting figures for a Yorkshire town revealed basic items were the most stolen in the past month.

South Yorkshire Police said it had recorded 137 incidents of shoplifting in Barnsley in April, with alcohol, meat and toiletries the top three products taken from stores.

Inspector Julie Mitchell, of Barnsley police, said: “For those people who are struggling to make ends meet, there are a number of agencies in Barnsley who can assist, for example, the Citizens Advice Bureau, and the Credit Union.

“They will signpost people to the most appropriate source of help.”
