Conductor takes the baton tofulfil ambition of a lifetime

A LIFETIME ambition was fulfilled for Derrick Levi when he conducted an orchestra for the first time.

Mr Levi’s wife Cynthia paid for the privilege of conducting the Airedale Symphony Orchestra as a treat for his 70th birthday.

He conducted the orchestra on Saturday in Ilkley town centre during a sponsored “playathon” to raise desperately needed funds.

The successful community orchestra is facing financial difficulties after costs for rehearsals and concerts have soared in the last 12 months.

To make ends meet, the orchestra played for six hours opposite Betty’s tea rooms.

Orchestra member Elizabeth Edgington said: “When Mrs Levi heard about the playathon she thought it would be a great opportunity for her husband and for the orchestra to gain some publicity for their cause.”

The orchestra’s regular conductor, John Anderson, said: “Derrick’s family got in touch to ask us to help fulfil a lifetime ambition we were happy to help.

“The orchestra has never received public funding and has always paid its way with tickets sales and subscriptions.

“But all this is changing, as charges for rehearsal spaces, concert venues and equipment soar.

“We’re asking anyone interested in helping keep this local orchestra alive to support us.”
