Conference focuses on broadband plans

Residents and businesses will come together this weekend for a conference which will focus on the steps being taken to improve broadband in North Yorkshire.

The event, on Saturday, at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal’s visitor centre, will see North Yorkshire County Council and BT, the winner of a £50m contract to deliver superfast broadband in the county, outline their plans for the future. They will also launch the name, logo and branding for the project.

The second Broadband North Yorkshire Conference has been organised by Julian Smith, MP for Skipton and Ripon, who leads a group of North Yorkshire and York MPs who have been supporting the campaign to improve internet connections across the county.

Those who have applied for tickets for the event will hear about what services will be offered under the contract that has been agreed and will be able to question BT and North Yorkshire County Council about the roll-out. Businesses will also hear about the opportunities having better broadband can give them.

Mr Smith said: “This £50m contract should mean that every property in North Yorkshire can expect a good quality broadband connection by 2015 and, as Members of Parliament, we will be pushing the county council and BT to ensure that happens.”

Earlier this year North Yorkshire became the first council to receive cash from a Government fund to improve internet access.
