Congregation raises £4,000 for food bank

GENEROUS parishioners in a city suburb have raised £4,000 to convert a flat above a shop into a food bank for people struggling with unemployment and low incomes.

The St Saviour’s Church food bank will open on Monday in Greengate Lane, High Green, Sheffield, and will also provide used children’s clothing, crockery and other basic items at very low prices.

Vicar of St Saviour’s, Canon Simon Bessant, said today: “The project is starting from the generosity of the congregation, the majority of whom are local people on limited incomes.

“The aim of the project is not to give hand outs, but to help people in a crisis to survive until they can be given proper support.”

Project Manager Maureen Greaves has been the church’s outreach worker for the past nine years. She said: “More and more people are feeling the strain of coping.

I’ve been working with many families over the years in my work for the Church Army, but these are the toughest times that I’ve known.

“The idea of the centre came to me as I felt that a gathering place to meet people’s needs would be really helpful.”
