Connery 'unable to appear' at property deal hearing

Actor Sir Sean Connery has told a Spanish court he cannot appear to give evidence in the case of an allegedly shady property deal involving his former holiday home.

The 80-year-old former Bond films star wrote to the judge explaining he cannot travel to Spain because of his age and unspecified health issues, a court official said.

Sir Sean and wife Micheline Roquebrune had been summoned to testify in Marbella yesterday. They have not been charged with any crime in the affair known in Spain as the "Goldfinger Case."

The couple sold their home in 1999 for around 5.5m and the plot was later redeveloped into a holiday complex of 70 apartments that sold for 45m.

A magistrate opened an inquiry into the sale amid claims of tax evasion and money-laundering around lawyers and officials from the local council.
