Conservation area to be extended

The conservation area in Elland is set to be expanded.

Calderdale Council intends to broaden the existing boundaries to take in more historic buildings.

The move will include three new areas and remove one – the site of the demolished Ely Garnett's Mill, Briggate.

The first new area includes the Elland Wesley Chapel, Harold Savage Hall and Bankfield Social Club.

It is also proposed to include Gog Hill, Ellen Royd Clinic and 100-102 Westgate.

The chairman of the Greater Elland Historical Society, Graeme Williams, said the group supported the plans.

"The main reason for the support was to try to help preserve some of the better buildings remaining in Elland, of which there are relatively few," he said. "Recent history, in the opinion of the society, has not been so kind to Elland heritage."

Conservation status helps to preserve areas of historic or architectural interest and means special consent is needed for certain planning applications.

The existing conservation area in Elland was drawn up in 1992 and includes more than 20 listed buildings.
