Conservation work on show for hall’s visitors

Painting conservator Gillian Walker, left, and Lucy Critchlow, assistant painting conservator, prepare to clean an oil painting of John Bourchier, who built Beningbrough Hall, near York. It is one of six paintings which are being lovingly restored back to their original glory at the stately home this week.

Visitors will be able to see at first hand the detailed work involved in repair and inspection to the canvas and frames. House steward Rob Turpin said: “In previous years any painting requiring conservation would be sent away, with the walls left blank in their absence. By carrying out the work in the hall we can not only keep the paintings on site but give the opportunity for people to view the work at close quarters, ask questions and gain a greater understanding of why it’s important to conserve such important pieces of the Beningbrough collection.” PICTURE: JAMES HARDIsty
