Controversial surgery plan put on hold

PLANS to bulldoze a run-down doctor's surgery and replace it with new state-of-the-art facilities have been put on hold in the face of strong public opposition.

Proposals to demolish the building on Moorcroft Road, York, and replace it with a new two-storey surgery were deferred after being put before a City of York Council planning committee.

The application followed a report on the building undertaken by NHS North Yorkshire and York Primary Care Trust in 2008, which deemed it as failing to provide adequate facilities to patients and staff.

But at the planning meeting the applicant, York Medical Group, was told it needs to make design modifications to reduce the impact on neighbouring properties.

Residents who live near the surgery claim the scale of the development would not fit into the character of the area and would also lead to a loss of privacy.
