Cooker that has been at heart of family kitchen for 57 years

THEY don't make them like they used to, well not according to Doreen Priestley who is only now retiring her gas cooker after 57 years of near-faultless service.

The retired teacher has used her ancient Cannon oven and hob to cook as well as heat the kitchen.

And she still uses the recipe book which came with it in 1953.

She thinks it might be one of the oldest in the country and says they don't make them as tough nowadays.

Doreen, 67, from Huddersfield, said: "My mum taught me to cook on it and I have seen no reason to get rid of it ever since.

"It has been so reliable over the years and it's really simple to use.

"I even use it to heat up my kitchen in the morning because it gets cold in there and there isn't a heater.

"I come down every morning, light it with a match and sit in front of it on a stool eating my toast.

"It has always been in our kitchen, even when we moved house, like an old friend and has really stood the test of time."

She now hopes a museum will take the cooker off her hands as she cannot use it to bake since its door broke off.

As well as the old cooker, she is also the proud owner of a 39-year-old Hoover Junior vacuum.
