The Grade II Listed “Splash Boat” in East Park was due to open this Bank Holiday weekend but a pair of coots have made their nest on a support batten, which could be knocked into the water by any wash.

Open spaces development officer Jennifer Hunt said: “We are hoping that the six weeks allows the young to be fully fledged. We will be keeping a close eye.”

All birds, their nests and eggs are protected by law and it is an offence to damage or destroy a nest while it is in use or being built.

Coun Terry Geraghty, Chair of Hull Culture and Leisure said: “We appreciate visitors may be disappointed that the splash boat will be unavailable for a short period of time, however we would like to remind them of the other fantastic facilities and activities East Park offers.”

The historic ride is one of just three in the country.
