Coracle oracle among the star attractions at crafts festival

It is surprising what people get up to in Ripon – making rope and rag dolls, studying coracles and calligraphy, Morris dancing and making lace, just for starters.

Ripon Museums will again be celebrating traditional arts and crafts this year for three days from May 30 to June 1 during their HeArts Fest at the Workhouse Museum on Allhallowgate, supported by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

In today’s world of mass-production and price-driven markets it can make a refreshing change to appreciate objects made with meticulous attention to detail, unique design and consummate skill – the art of the blacksmith and green-woodsman, the spinner and the lace-maker.

HeArts Fest is a chance to celebrate North Yorkshire’s craftsmen and women and perhaps even get started on a new hobby.

Expert demonstrators will be on hand to inspire and advise visitors and guests will be able to try their hand at some crafts. There will be activities for children throughout the event, all included in the normal museum admission price.

Different skills will be demonstrated each day, so it is important to pick up a leaflet with the correct timetable, available around the town.

Anyone who buys Ripon Museums’ 3-in-1 ticket can see all the demonstrators over three days and join in with all activities for only £8 and bring up to three children per adult free.
