Council calls on farmers for help

FARMERS were yesterday called in to help clear routes to some of the most isolated villages following a further night of heavy snow in East Yorkshire.

East Riding Council said it had enlisted help from owners large farm vehicles to maintain access to Sledmere, Garton, Huggate, Warter, Bempton, Flamborough and Swinefleet, which were virtually cut off by deep drifts.

The authority said temperatures had "dropped dramatically" yesterday – below the lows of minus 10c registered earlier in the week.

The council said: "Garrowby Hill and the higher parts of the Wolds continue to be a massive challenge for us as we continue to get snowfall and drifting caused by strong winds."

Motorists were advised to stay off the roads unless their journeys were necessary.

Humberside Police said it had hired an extra four 4x4 vehicles to add to its complement of eight as officers responded to a "significant" number of calls.
