Council cancels fireworks display

Spending cuts have been blamed for a decision to cancel this year’s fireworks display in Hull.

Hull Council, which has faced budget cuts of £65m, decided to axe the popular display, which last year attracted 30,000 people into the city centre.

Coun Terry Geraghty said they’d had a simple choice: “Following a consultation with residents and businesses earlier this year, the decision was taken not to hold the fireworks display.

“It costs between £30,000 and £35,000 to stage the event.

“We faced a simple choice as to whether we used the money for front line services, such as employing two Police Community Support Officers or an experienced teacher, or let it disappear in a puff of smoke on one night.”

Meanwhile Goole Town Council and Shooting Fish Theatre Company are preparing for a bonfire night celebration on Saturday at West Park in the town.

A funfair and stalls begin at 6pm, processions are at 7pm and a firework finale at 7.30pm.

Over 10,000 people attend the bonfire each year - this year themed around the Three Little Pigs - which is free and attracts people from as far away as Hull.
