Council to decide on market plan

A DECISION is expected this week on a planning application to construct a new "landmark" building to house Penistone market as the town centre is redeveloped.

Councillors had been expected to decide on the application earlier this month but that was put off until a special meeting which will be held tomorrow.

The application is for a building with a traditional cruck-style construction on a site close to the existing market. It would

accommodate traders on market days but would also be open to other potential uses when not needed as a retail base.

The scheme is part of a wider redevelopment of Penistone, which includes the construction of a new Tesco supermarket .

Planning officials accept the building, with a high roofline would be "dominant" in a conservation area, but say the distinctive structure would help to draw visitors into the area.

The design was also intended to deter crime, with gates to prevent access when the building was not in use and walls around the base of the structure designed to make it awkward to use them for seating, in an attempt to prevent it becoming a gathering point.

Councillors have been recommended to approve the scheme.
