Council goes extra mile for Jubilee

ROUNDABOUTS in the East Riding will be getting a right royal makeover for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

A new garden is being created in Beverley and six roundabouts around the county will be replanted with designs reflecting both the Jubilee and the Olympic Games.

The Olympic torch will be passing through the area on June 18/19.

Old setts are going to be taken up in a corner of New Walkergate, Beverley, and new benches, paving and planting put in with the area renamed the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Garden.

Roundabouts on main roads into Beverley, Bridlington and surrounding areas will be revamped, including the roundabouts in Swinemoor Lane, Lincoln Way, Victoria Road and Grange Way, Beverley, Bessingby Road, Bridlington and the Driffield bypass.

The garden redesign will cost the taxpayer £30,000 and the roundabout from £2,000 to £3,000 each, although some will be sponsored.

The council says the designs “will incorporate sustainable planting with a splash of summer bedding and will provide a timely reminder in future years of the special events that took place in 2012.”

East Riding Council leader Coun Steve Parnaby said: “This year is going to be a truly memorable one for our residents and for the country as a whole.

“As well as the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s succession to the throne, the Olympic Torch will pass through this area on its way to London for the start of the games.

“The designs being worked on make excellent use of sustainable planting are low maintenance and will provide a fitting backdrop for the summer’s festivities and are being funded from existing budgets.”

Work is planned over the next four years to carry out further improvements to a number of roundabouts situated along main routes throughout the East Riding.
