Council introduces charges for parking at historic estate

Visitors to an historic park will have to pay to park their cars – and the Calderdale Council charges come into force tomorrow.

The local authority, which maintains the Shibden estate, says it is introducing the charges in order to be able to continue looking after and improving the grounds and facilities there.

Andrew Pitts, Calderdale Council’s acting head neighbourhoods and community engagement, said: “We have some fantastic attractions here in Calderdale, many of which are maintained by the council. This small charge for parking will help us to maintain and continue to improve the facilities at Shibden Park.

“I hope people will continue to come to the park and support us in preserving the borough’s heritage.”

From tomorrow, a £2 charge will be payable at weekends, on bank holidays and during Calderdale school holiday periods.

However, visiting drivers will only have to pay £1 between Mondays and Fridays outside local school holiday periods.

The charge – which must be paid by motorists going into the park between 9am to 6pm each day – is at a temporary rate while the council consults on a pay-and-display system.

Blue badge holders will continue to park free of charge.

Visitors are being warned they may experience some delays for the first few days.

Work in the coming months to resurface the lower car park will mean some areas are closed.

Council officials say regular park visitors can apply for season tickets.

The estate includes the 600-year-old grade II*-listed Shibden Hall.
