Council keen to fill empty houses

OWNERS of empty properties in Driffield are being urged to bring them back into use – or have them bought through compulsory purchase orders.

Housing officers from East Riding Council will be in the town next week looking for empty properties that have fallen into disrepair.

They will speak to neighbours to try to find how long they have been empty and what effect they are having on the neighbourhood.

The council said most are brought back into use by informal negotiations with the owner, but compulsory purchase orders will be used if necessary.

Councillor Jane Evison, portfolio holder for cultural services, housing and public protection, said: "Across the country long-term empty properties are known to attract fly-tipping, anti-social behaviour, damage, arson, squatting and to de-value houses in the area.

"We can understand how those living near these properties can be concerned about the effect they are having. This council is keen to work with home owners to bring problem properties back into use so that instead of causing a nuisance they can provide a home for someone."
