Council ‘non’ to campsite for fans of Le Tour

PLANS for a campsite on the route of the Grand Départ of the Tour de France through Yorkshire look set to be rejected.

Applicant JS Morton and Sons has applied for permission to use a field for camping at Elland Hall Farm and Caravan Park at Exley Lane, Elland, near Halifax.

The field is currently used for grazing and would be used for camping in spring, summer and autumn.

Local councillor John Ford, who supports the application, said: “Next year is the Tour de France which goes to Elland so it is important to cater for as many people as possible. The site in question is a long way from any housing and the applicant is strict about its usage.”

But a report to Calderdale Council’s planning committee says the site is within green belt and noisy campers would cause a nuisance to local residents.

The report suggests that a temporary campsite might have been acceptable but talks between the authority and the applicant’s agent had led to disagreements.

However, a council officer said it appeared that the applicant was unwilling to agree to some measures to reduce the impact of the proposal and “despite requests from ourselves for clarification there remains confusion as to the extent of site occupancy being sought.”

The report says the application would be for up to six tents accommodating up to 12 people – a maximum total of 180 people – which the authority considers would be too many.

Seven people have objected to the plans, citing noise, fears of crime and increased traffic.

Earlier this week Harrogate Council announced plans for a “planning amnesty” to make it easier to cater visitors expected during the Tour de France.

Planning permission will not be needed for temporary campsites, caravan parks or car parks as long as they do not continue for more than 28 days. Action will only be taken by the council if there is a threat to safety or a potential impact on neighbouring property.
