Council offers tips on Royal wedding revels

Fears that red tape could deter many communities from celebrating the Royal Wedding have led council bosses to lay on special training days – on how to stage a good old knees up without being tripped up by health and safety.

Scarborough Council officers Matthew Joseph and Gemma Ryan will take people through the necessary steps and will design bespoke training manuals for the groups wanting to stage a street party.

The manuals will include help dealing with things like road closures, insurance, entertainment licenses, and even information about how to recoup any costs.

Janet Jefferson, Cabinet member for tourism and culture, said: "The visit of the Queen to Scarborough last year showed the strength of support there is for the Royal Family in this borough.

"I would love to see that old-fashioned sense of community spirit alive and well in our streets, parks and open spaces and I'm delighted the council is able to offer some practical help."

The training days which will offer residents advice on how to stage their own street parties take place at 10am on Wednesday February 2 at the Town Hall in Scarborough, at 10am on Friday February 11 at the Evron Centre in Filey, and at 6pm on Wednesday February 9 at Church House in Flowergate, Whitby.

The town hall is to shed 60 jobs due to spending cuts. But the GMB is pleased that the Royal Wedding training is being provided in-house by council officials and says it would only be an issue if outside agencies were involved.
