Council plea over use of fireworks

The 1875 Explosives Act prohibits throwing or setting off fireworks on any highway, street, thoroughfare or public place.

Kirklees Council says it is already having problems with people setting off fireworks on Huddersfield’s historic Castle Hill. Fireworks pose a real threat of serious injury to people and wildlife and a ban was imposed at Castle Hill at a similar time last year.

The police are ready to enforce penalty fines for anyone in breach of the ban and they will again be patrolling areas that see dangerous firework activity in public spaces.

Castle Hill ranger Julian Brown said: “The vast majority of people do heed our warnings with regard to the use of fireworks.

“It’s much better, and much cheaper, to go an organised display which is a lot safer for everybody.”

Having no fireworks on Castle Hill helps to reduce the disturbance to wildlife and the damage to the ancient monument, he said.

“Fireworks can cause real misery as well as litter,” he added.
