Council postpones planning decision on town supermarket schemes

Planners at Bradford Council have postponed a key decision on two major supermarket applications following the announcement of a third bid.

The applications for the two Shipley supermarket sites were scheduled to go before the special planning Regulatory and Appeals Committee meeting on September 23.

John Eyles, Bradford Council’s major developments manager, said the applications for the Otley Road and Airedale Mills supermarket schemes would now be deferred so that the latest proposals for the Crag Road site could be assessed.

Skipton Properties and Morrisons have unveiled plans for a supermarket, 94 new homes and a small commercial zone on a site next to Shipley Railway Station bound by Crag Road and Leeds Road.

Cardinal shop fitters based at Airedale Mills wants to move to another site. Tim Considine, managing director at Cardinal, said: “We see no reason why we cannot go to committee on September 23 as originally planned, and we urge members to make a decision on our site as soon as possible. A delay in determining our scheme will have an impact on the long term investment of Cardinal, and a potential impact on new jobs from the food store.”
