Council resorts to crushing cars free

HULL Council is offering to crush unwanted vehicles for free in a bid to reduce the number of abandoned cars on the city's streets.

The authority had 450 reports of abandoned vehicles last year, which as well as being a nuisance can also be a drain on the emergency services if they are set on fire or subject to criminal damage.

The Council is working with Hull Citysafe to combat the problem, and after disposing of unwanted vehicles will issue owners with a DVLA certificate of destruction.

Council environmental crime manager Mark Cornall said: "People who no longer want their vehicles can take advantage of the Council's free vehicle take-back scheme which aims to reduce the number of cars illegally abandoned in Hull.

"The scheme is easy to use. All people have to do is contact the Council and give information about the vehicle and their contact details.

"Our approved contractor will contact the customer to confirm they are the owner of the vehicle and arrange a convenient collection date."

He added: "As this scheme is free car owners in Hull have no excuse to abandon their vehicle.

"If people don't take advantage of the Council's scheme or any of the approved treatment facilities they may receive a fixed penalty notice. They could even be summoned to the local magistrates' court."
