Council reuses road chippings to help cut costs

Thousands of tonnes of road chippings will be recycled by a Yorkshire council as part of its efforts to cut costs.

The chippings picked up by East Riding Council road sweepers used to be sent to landfill but are now being cleaned and stored ready to help repair the district’s roads.

Councillor Chris Matthews, cabinet member for highways, said: “By hiring in equipment and cleaning the chippings for reuse in this year’s scheme, the council is making savings on landfill tax and an overall saving on programme costs of around £26,000.”

Earlier this week, East Riding Council revealed it needs to find budget savings of more than £20m this year.
