Council seats: Student aims to win seat in council elections

MOST students who have just turned 18 will be starting to knuckle down with revision for their A-Levels.

But Josh Newlove is splitting his time between studies and campaigning as he battles to win a seat for Labour on East Riding Council.

The teenager, a student at South Hunsley Sixth Form College, is just three months past his 18th birthday making him one of the youngest candidates in this year's elections.

He is standing for Labour in the Willerby and Kirk Ella ward where there is a by-election taking place after Conservative Kerry Hemming-Taylor retired and his chances have been boosted after the Tories missed a deadline for nominating a candidate.

Asked why he decided to stand, he said: "I think it was the need to bring youth into policies. The worry I have is not enough youngsters are involved in politics. I want to get everyone involved."

He joined the party when he was 16 and says he chose Labour because he agreed with its values of fairness and equality. Mr Newlove, who is studying English, history and philosophy at A-Level, said he would like to stand for parliament in the future,.

Other young candidates contesting elections include 19-year-old Alan Belmore, who is standing for the Liberal Democrats in Hemsworth, West Yorkshire, in the General Election.
