Council seeks calm over fees for parking

RICHMONDSHIRE District Council chiefs have moved to allay fears that a sweeping review of parking charges could strangle the area’s vital multi-million pound tourist industry.

A consultation on controversial plans to introduce new charges in some of the local authority’s 21 car parks, is currently under way, with members set to consider the findings next month.

The proposals to introduce charges in some car parks for the first time – including Richmond Station and the Broadway in Colburn – provoked fury when suggested earlier this year with residents and traders concerned they could threaten the area’s vital tourism industry.

But council leader John Blackie, who opposed the plans earlier this year when in opposition, told the Yorkshire Post yesterday that the local authority would not rush into any decision following the review.

“In opposition we as Independents convinced the previous administration that the approach had been rushed without proper consideration of the long term consequences for the area,” he said. “We are tackling this in a measured way.

“The survey of which this is part of is a very extensive consultation taking place before we move matters forward.

“Individuals, businesses and communities will all have the opportunity to have their say.”

Richmondshire District Council had drawn up plans to revise the charges in car parks to counter the intense financial pressures caused by the Government’s funding cuts.

Fears have been voiced that visitors already attempting to cope with the soaring cost of petrol would be put off from stopping off if the parking charges are introduced.
