Council set for road improvements

Councillors in Kirklees are to consider road and pavement improvements for Varley Road in Slaithwaite near Huddersfield.

The major project would cover improvements to 2.1km – about 1.25 miles –of the B6109 between Mansergh House and the B6107 Meltham Road.

The work will cost about 470,000 and would include repairing retaining walls and drains while improving kerbs and road surfaces.

Councillor David Sheard, Kirklees Council cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: "The council will make every effort to reduce the duration of the road closure and minimise disruption whilst we make significant improvements to this local strategic route."

The cabinet will consider the scheme when it meets on Tuesday June 22.

If approved, the work could start at the end of this month.

Varley Road would then be closed to through traffic until November while remaining open to pedestrians.

Council officials say information – including advice on routes and diversions – will be sent to affected households before the work starts.
